Jamdani
A fine, figured cotton cloth from Bangladesh and India in which motifs are woven in with extra weft threads, thread by thread.
Also: Dhakai jamdani, Dhaka muslin
Jamdani is a hand-woven fabric, traditionally of fine cotton, in which the motifs are added by hand during weaving, using extra weft threads that are laid in only where the design needs them. The weaver works from the top or the back of the cloth, often with a helper. The ground is light and sheer, and the motifs are in white or colour. Dhaka in Bangladesh is its home, and UNESCO inscribed the traditional art of Jamdani weaving of Bangladesh in 2013. West Bengal, in the Dhaniakhali and Shantipur area, weaves its own jamdani sarees.
