Buta
A small repeated motif, such as a flower, leaf or sprig, scattered over the body or the pallu of a saree.
Also: boota, butti, buti, booti
Buta is a Persian and Hindustani word for a small motif. Flowers, leaves, sprigs, buds and small animals are woven or printed in rows, or scattered over the cloth. Buta is the Hindi word, and butti or buti names smaller ones. The larger a buta, the bolder the effect. Banarasi, jamdani and many other weaves use buta all over the body. The paisley or mango motif began as a large buta. A saree with many small buta is sometimes called a butidar saree.
