Loom
The frame or machine that holds the warp under tension so that the weft can be woven through it.
Also: pit loom, frame loom, kargha
A loom holds the warp threads taut and lets the weaver raise and lower sets of them while the weft is passed through. Saree looms in India are mostly of two kinds: the pit loom, in which the weaver sits at ground level with the treadles in a pit below, and the frame loom, which stands above the floor. Both are worked by hand and foot. Looms vary with the fabric: those for figured silks have extra equipment, such as a jacquard or a dobby, for patterns. A loom is often kept in the weaver's own house.
