Also: hand-woven, hand woven, khaddi
A handloom is a loom that is worked by hand and foot. The weaver passes the shuttle, pushes the beater and works the treadles without electric power. The word also names the cloth made on it. Handloom sarees are made in many parts of India, from Kanchipuram and Varanasi to Dhaka in Bangladesh, and the sector gives work to millions of people, many of them women. India marks National Handloom Day on 7 August. Handloom cloth is not always better than powerloom cloth, but it is made in small lots and can carry fine, complex patterns.
