Sources and photo credits

Pallu stands on the work of volunteers who document the world's textiles in the open.

Facts

Wikidata (public domain, CC0) and Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0). Every saree page and country overview links to the article and the record it was written from.

Wording and attribution

Pallu does not copy text. Saree pages and country overviews take their facts from the Wikipedia article named at the foot of each page and are rewritten in Pallu's own words. A check compares each page with its source; any page that carries over more than a short phrase is rewritten before it is shown. Because the pages are adapted from Wikipedia, they credit the article and its contributors, link to the original, and are shared under the same CC BY-SA 4.0 licence.

Photos

All photos come from Wikimedia Commons. Only freely licensed images are used: public domain, CC0, CC BY and CC BY-SA. Each photo on a saree page is credited beside it with its author and licence and links to its page on Commons. Small pictures in lists, cards and strips are credited at the foot of the page they appear on, under "Photo credits on this page", with the author, the licence and a link to the source. Photos may be resized; no other changes are made. If a photo is yours and should not be here, write to us and it will be taken down.

Drawings

The swatches, the step-by-step drapes, the motif and weave illustrations and the stand-in figures are drawn by Pallu's own code from what each page says: its colours, motifs, border, fibre, craft and drape. Where no free photo exists, a drawing stands in for it. They are diagrams, not pictures of a particular saree or person, and they are free to reuse with a link back. No AI image generator is used.

Good reading

The articles listed under "Good reading" on a saree page are ones its Wikipedia article cites, from publishers and institutions such as UNESCO, Britannica, the BBC, The Hindu, Sahapedia, the Crafts Council of India, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Smithsonian. Pallu shows the headline and the publisher and links to the original; it does not copy the article.

Drapes, the wear calendar, centres and the glossary

Original text and drawings by the Pallu desk, written with AI assistance. Festival dates are worked out by rule where one exists (fixed dates) and otherwise taken from published panchangs; days that follow the moon or a local calendar are marked "about" and can shift by a day.

Map

Country outlines are from Natural Earth (public domain). Weaving centres are marked at the middle of the town.

The news wire shows only a headline and the outlet's name. Every link leads to the original publisher.

The weekly drape

Every Monday: seven sarees you may not know, what is being worn this week, and one drape explained step by step.
