Border

The decorated band that runs along each long edge of a saree.

A zari border: bands of gold-wrapped thread, with a row of small triangles between plain lines.

Also: kinara, paad, karai

The border is the woven or printed band that frames the two long edges of the cloth. It may be a thin line or a hand-span wide, plain or filled with motifs, and it is often in a colour that contrasts with the body. In many handloom centres the border is woven together with the body on the same loom, and in some weaves it is made separately and joined. The border shows along the hem when the saree is worn, so it gives the drape its outline. Names include kinara in Hindi, paad in Bengali and Marathi, and karai in Tamil.
