Zari
Metallic thread, traditionally of gold or silver, used to weave or embroider borders, pallus and motifs.
Also: jari, zardozi thread, gold thread
Zari is thread made from a thin strip of metal, wound round a core of silk or cotton. In the past it was made of real silver, often gilded with gold. Surat in Gujarat has long been a centre of zari making. Much zari now is made from copper or polyester coated with silver or gold colour, which is cheaper and lighter. Zari is woven into the border, the pallu and the body of sarees such as the Kanjivaram and the Banarasi. It is also used in embroidery. Real zari tarnishes slowly and can be tested by a trained eye.
