Pallu
The free end of a saree, the part that crosses the chest and falls over the shoulder.
Also: pallav, palla, aanchal, seragu
The pallu is the last stretch of the cloth, the end that is not tucked into the waist. In the Nivi drape it crosses the chest and hangs over the left shoulder. It is usually the most worked part of the saree, with a wider band of zari, heavier motifs or a different pattern from the rest of the cloth. Weavers plan it first, because the pallu sets the design of the whole piece. The word also names the same part in other drapes, where it may be pinned, drawn over the head or spread across both shoulders. Names for it vary by language: pallav in Marathi and Gujarati, aanchal in Hindi and Urdu, seragu in Tamil.
