Yarn count
A number that tells how fine a yarn is; for cotton, a higher count such as 80s means a finer thread than 20s.
Also: count, cotton count, Ne, 40s count
Yarn count is a way of measuring thickness. In the English system used for cotton, the count says how many hanks of a set length weigh one pound, so a bigger number means a finer yarn. A 40s yarn is finer than a 20s, and a very fine mulmul might use 100s or higher. The count affects how the cloth feels, how sheer it is and how much it costs. For silk and synthetic fibres, a different system, the denier, is used. Weavers and buyers talk about counts when ordering yarn.
