Denier
A measure of thread thickness used for silk and man-made fibres: the weight in grams of 9,000 metres of the yarn.
Also: D, silk denier, 20/22 denier
Denier is the weight in grams of 9,000 metres of yarn. A thicker yarn weighs more over the same length, so it has a higher denier. Raw silk is often described by a range, for example 20 to 22 denier, because silk is not perfectly even. Finer silk gives lighter, softer cloth, while thicker silk gives heavier cloth. Polyester and nylon filaments are also described in denier. For cotton, a different system, yarn count, is used, in which a higher number means a finer yarn.
