Temple border
A border of stepped triangles that recalls the outline of a South Indian temple tower.
Also: gopuram border, koyil karai, kovil border
The temple border is a border of repeated stepped triangles, usually woven in zari, that recalls the outline of a gopuram, the tall gateway tower of a South Indian temple. It is the classic border of the Kanchipuram sari and is common in other South Indian silk and cotton sarees, including Mysore, Dharmavaram and Chettinad cotton. The triangles may be solid, outlined or filled with small motifs, and a narrow band of the same shape often runs along the pallu. A saree with this border is regarded as a traditional choice for temple visits, festivals and weddings.
