Rudraksha

A motif of small round beads, named for the sacred seed of Shiva, found in Kanchipuram sarees.

A swatch drawn for this page, not a picture of Rudraksha.

Also: rudraksham

Rudraksha is the seed of the tree Elaeocarpus ganitrus, strung as beads for prayer and linked in Hindu tradition with Shiva. In weaving, the motif is a small round bead with a textured surface, woven as a row along a border or as scattered dots over the body. Rudraksham is a well known pattern in Kanchipuram sarees, usually in zari. It is plain but dense, and it is chosen for a quiet saree where a larger motif would be too much. The bead pattern also appears in embroidery and block printing.
