Peacock

A peacock motif, a favourite of Indian weavers, found in the pallu, the border and the body.

The peacock, mayur or mor: a favourite on borders and pallus, fan tail in eyes of colour.

Also: mayur, mor, mayil, naal

The peacock is the national bird of India. In Hindu tradition it carries Kartikeya and is associated with Krishna, who wears a peacock feather. In textiles, peacocks are woven or printed singly, in pairs, facing each other or fanning their tails, and a feather is used alone as a smaller design. Paithani sarees are known for the peacock in the pallu, and Kanchipuram, Banarasi and Chanderi weavers also use it. It is a motif of the monsoon and of joy, so it is a common choice for festival and wedding sarees.
