Also: paithani saree
Paithani is a silk saree of Maharashtra, named for the town of Paithan near Aurangabad, and woven today also at Yeola in Nashik district. The silk is fine and the zari motifs are woven in a tapestry technique, in which each motif is built up by hand with its own small shuttle of thread, so that the back is as neat as the front. The border is often a row of small oblique squares, and the pallu is rich with a peacock, lotus or a parrot, in a different colour from the body. A Paithani is a prized wedding saree, worn with the nine yard nauvari drape. It has a Geographical Indication tag.
