Nivi

The commonest way of wearing a saree today: pleats at the front and the pallu over the left shoulder.

A swatch drawn for this page, not a picture of Nivi.

Also: Nivi drape, Nivi style

In the Nivi drape the saree is tucked into the petticoat at the waist, wrapped once round the body, and then gathered into a fan of pleats at the front, which are tucked in at the navel. The remaining cloth is carried across the chest and over the left shoulder, so that the pallu hangs behind. The style became the standard across much of India through the twentieth century, helped by the blouse and petticoat. It is quick to wear and it shows both the body and the pallu. Many regional drapes, such as the Madisar and the Gujarati style, are different from it.
