Paisley
A curved teardrop motif, the best known design in saree weaving and printing.
Also: boteh, buta, ambi, mango motif
Paisley is a teardrop shape with a curved tip, often filled with flowers and fine lines. The Persian name is boteh, and in India the same shape is the mango, called kairi or ambi, or one kind of buta. It was woven in Kashmir shawls, and the English name comes from Paisley, a Scottish town that made imitations of those shawls. In saree weaving the paisley appears in Kanchipuram, Banarasi and Paithani cloth, in block prints and in embroidery. It is placed in rows on a border, spread across a field or set large in the pallu.
