Kairi

The mango motif, a curved teardrop shape found across Indian weaving and embroidery.

Paisley, called kairi or ambi, the mango shape: a curled teardrop that appears from Kashmir to Kanchipuram.

Also: ambi, manga, mango motif, mango

Kairi is the Hindi word for a raw mango, and the motif is a mango drawn in profile: a tapered, curved shape with a rounded body and a bent tip. It is a symbol of fertility and plenty. In south India it is called manga or mangai, and a mango border or motif is common on Kanchipuram and other silk sarees. In Paithani and Banarasi weaving, kairi is a favourite shape for the pallu. It is close to paisley and the two are often treated as the same motif, though the kairi is usually more clearly a mango.
