Nine-yard saree
A longer saree, about eight metres, worn in drapes that pass between the legs.
Also: nine yards, navvari, nauvari, kashta
A nine-yard saree is about eight metres long, a good deal more than the usual length. The extra cloth lets the wearer pass the pleats between the legs and tuck them at the back. This gives the long, trouser-like drape worn in Maharashtra as the nauvari or kashta, and by Tamil and some Telugu and Kannada Brahmin women as the Madisar. Today the nine-yard saree is mostly worn at weddings, festivals and rituals, and for classical dance and cultural events. Weavers still make them in cotton and silk.
