Meenakari
A technique of enamel on metal that gave its name to Banarasi weaving in several bright silk colours over zari.
Also: meena, minakari
Meenakari is the art of decorating metal with coloured enamel, and it is a famous craft of Rajasthan. Weavers of Banaras borrowed the name for a style of brocade in which flowers and other motifs are woven in bright coloured silks, such as red, blue and green, on a ground of zari or silk. The coloured silk is woven in as extra weft, so that each flower looks like a small piece of enamel set in gold. Meenakari sarees are usually richly coloured on the field and used for weddings, and the design is related to jangla and jaal.
