Jangla

A Banarasi design of dense, winding vines and flowers that fills the whole saree like a jungle.

Brocade: a motif lifted in gold or silver zari thread, woven into the cloth rather than printed on it.

Also: jungla, jangala

Jangla is a Banarasi design. The name comes from the word for jungle, and the pattern is made of curling vines, leaves and flowers that run all over the cloth, often in several colours of silk with zari. It is a type of jaal, with a freer and more crowded look. Jangla is woven with extra weft threads on a jacquard or, historically, with a draw loom and weavers who sat at the loom with a helper. Sarees in this pattern were made for royal and wealthy buyers, and the design is still made by Banarasi weavers.
