Jaal

A pattern of an all-over network of vines, flowers or shapes that covers the saree's field.

Brocade: a motif lifted in gold or silver zari thread, woven into the cloth rather than printed on it.

Also: jala, jali, net pattern

Jaal means net. In weaving it names an all-over design in which flowers, leaves or other shapes are linked by stems or lines in a network, usually repeating across the whole field. The effect is a lattice with no empty space between the motifs. Jaal is a well known feature of Banarasi brocade, where it may be woven in zari or in colour, and it is found in Kanchipuram and other silk too. It is a different kind of pattern from a scattering of buttas, which sit apart from each other. A saree with a jaal is often plain at the pallu, since the jaal fills the body.
