Hem
The lower edge of the saree, the one that falls near the ankle when the cloth is worn.
Also: lower edge, bottom edge
In a saree the hem is not a sewn turn-up. It is the long border edge that happens to lie at the bottom when the cloth is tucked in and wrapped, so the border usually does the work of a hem. The height is set at the waist: the wearer tucks the top edge of the cloth into the petticoat so that the lower edge just clears the floor or touches the top of the foot. Because the tuck decides the length, one saree fits wearers of different heights. A fall may be sewn inside to protect it.
