Fall
A strip of plain cloth stitched on the inside of the lower hem to weight it and protect it from wear.
Also: saree fall
A fall is a narrow strip of sturdy cotton or similar cloth that is sewn along the inner edge of the saree where it meets the ground. It does three jobs. It adds a little weight so that the hem hangs straight, it takes the rubbing and dirt that would otherwise wear the saree itself, and it is easy to replace. Falls are sewn on by a tailor and are usually chosen to match the colour of the saree. Many sellers offer the service with a new purchase. Light synthetic sarees often need one more than heavy silks.
