Ghoonghat
A veil made by drawing the pallu or a dupatta over the head and sometimes the face.
Also: ghunghat, ghungat, veil, odhna
Ghoonghat is the north Indian word for a veil. A woman may draw the end of her saree, the pallu, over her head as a sign of respect, modesty or custom, and in some communities the veil covers part of the face in front of elders or in-laws. The custom is strong in parts of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Bihar, though it differs by family and place, and many women do not follow it now. In Bengal the saree is drawn over the head at prayer and at weddings. The saree is the main garment that allows this without any second cloth.
