Ghagra

A long, full, gathered skirt worn by women in north and west India.

Also: ghaghra, ghagri

Ghagra is a long gathered skirt, wide at the hem and held by a drawstring at the waist. Women in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh have long worn it with a short blouse and an odhni or dupatta. Everyday ghagras are of cotton, and festival ones may be embroidered, tie-dyed or mirror worked. Lehenga is a newer and more fashionable name for a similar skirt, and many people use the two words for the same garment. The ghagra is also the lower part of the chaniya choli worn at Navratri.
