Chaniya choli

The three-piece outfit of Gujarat and Rajasthan: a flared skirt, a short blouse and a long scarf.

A swatch drawn for this page, not a picture of Chaniya choli.

Also: ghagra choli, chania choli

Chaniya is a Gujarati word for a flared skirt, and choli is the short bodice. With an odhni, a long scarf worn over the shoulder or head, they make the traditional dress of women and girls in Gujarat and Rajasthan. The skirt may have mirror work, embroidery or bandhani. It is now best known as the dress for Navratri, when women wear brightly worked chaniya cholis for garba and dandiya. It is an old regional alternative to the saree, though some women wear both.
