Gara

A Parsi saree with fine embroidery, often of birds, flowers and Chinese scenes, worn with the pallu in front.

Also: Parsi gara, garo

A gara is a saree of the Parsi community of Gujarat and Mumbai, heavily embroidered by hand, usually on silk. Its motifs of flowers, birds, pagodas and figures show Chinese influence, which came with Parsi traders in the China trade in the nineteenth century. Garas are expensive, passed down in families and worn at weddings and the Navroze new year. The saree is worn in the Parsi style, with the pallu brought over the right shoulder to the front. Real garas are made by hand, and surviving workshops are small.
