Appliqué
Decoration made by sewing shapes of one cloth on to another.
Also: applique, appliqué work, patch work
In appliqué, pieces of cloth are cut into shapes and sewn on to a base fabric. The edges are turned under or stitched over so they do not fray. Odisha has a well known appliqué tradition from Pipli, where bright pieces are stitched on temple canopies and umbrellas, and Gujarat and Rajasthan also use it. On sarees, appliqué is a way to make borders and motifs without weaving them: a flower of one cloth is stitched down on another. Gota patti is also a kind of appliqué, made of metallic ribbon.
