Patchwork
Cloth made by joining small pieces of different fabrics, often as borders or whole sarees in craft work.
Also: kawandi, kudhdi
Patchwork joins small pieces of fabric, cut in squares, triangles or other shapes, into one larger cloth. In India it began as a way of using scraps and worn cloth. Gujarat and Rajasthan have strong patchwork traditions, often joined with appliqué and mirror work, and the Banjara community is known for it. In sarees, patchwork appears as a border, a pallu or a whole body, with pieces of printed or woven cloth stitched together. Some designers now make patchwork sarees from leftovers of handloom production, which is a way of using offcuts that would otherwise be thrown away.
