Trousseau
The set of clothes and linen that a bride brings or is given for her married life, in which sarees have a central place.
Also: jahez, bridal wardrobe
Trousseau is a French word for the bundle of clothes and household linen that a bride takes to her new home. In Indian marriages the trousseau of sarees has often been a family project, with sarees chosen from the home weaving centre, such as a Kanchipuram silk bought for the wedding, a Banarasi, a Paithani or a bandhani. The groom's side often gives sarees as well. Mothers and grandmothers pass on sarees too, which is how many old weaves survive. A saree bought for a trousseau is often kept for decades and worn on occasions.
