Also: sozni embroidery, sozni kari

Sozni is a Kashmiri embroidery, named for the needle, in which the design is worked in thin silk thread in very small, close stitches. It is most often seen on pashmina and fine wool shawls, where it can cover the whole field or run as a border, and it is also done on silk sarees. Floral and paisley forms are the usual subject. A piece of heavy sozni can take months because of the fineness of the stitch. It is a different craft from tilla, which uses metal thread, and from aari, which uses a hook.
