Aari

Embroidery done with a hooked needle that makes quick chain stitch, worked on a stretched frame.

A swatch drawn for this page, not a picture of Aari.

Also: ari work, aari embroidery, tambour

Aari is a method, not a pattern. The tool is a hooked needle that looks a little like a fine crochet hook. The cloth is stretched on a frame, and the embroiderer works from the top with the needle while the thread is held below, so that a continuous loop forms a chain stitch. The hook also holds beads and sequins. It is much faster than a plain needle, and it is used widely on bridal sarees and blouses. Aari is closely linked with Kashmir, Gujarat and Rajasthan, and it is related to the tambour work of other countries.
