Saree or sari

Two English spellings of the same garment, a long unstitched cloth wrapped round the body.

A swatch drawn for this page, not a picture of Saree or sari.

Also: sari, saree, sadi, sare

Both spellings are in use for the same cloth, from the Sanskrit word sati and the Prakrit sadi, meaning a strip of cloth. Sari is the spelling most often used by scholars, museums and encyclopedias. Saree is the commoner spelling in India, in the trade and in shops, and in many news pieces. Neither is wrong. Languages in India have their own words, such as sare in Kannada and Marathi, sadi in Bengali, and cheera in Telugu. Pallu uses saree as the main spelling and sari when it quotes an article title.
