Powerloom
A loom driven by an electric motor, which weaves much faster and more cheaply than a handloom.
Also: power loom, mill cloth
On a powerloom a motor does the work of throwing the shuttle and beating the weft, so the operator mainly watches the cloth, mends broken threads and changes beams. Powerlooms produce cloth in large quantity at a lower price, and much of the printed and plain cotton and synthetic yardage sold in India is made this way. Cloth woven on a powerloom can look very like handloom cloth, especially in jacquard designs, which is why labels and certificates such as the Handloom Mark exist. India's rules and labelling treat handloom and powerloom cloth as separate things.
