Kuttu

The interlocking join used in Gadwal sarees, where a silk border and pallu are woven into a cotton body rather than sewn on.

Also: interlocking weft join, Gadwal join

Gadwal sarees from Telangana are known for a cotton body with a silk border and pallu. The silk parts are not stitched to the cotton. They are woven in with an interlocking technique where the weft threads of silk and cotton loop around each other at the join. The process is often called kuttu. The result is a saree that is light like cotton, yet carries a silk border and zari in one piece, with a slightly wavy edge where the two meet. The method is slow, and it is one of the features that mark a Gadwal handloom saree.
