Korvai

In Kanchipuram weaving, a border in a different colour woven separately and joined to the body by interlocking the weft threads.

The temple border of the south: stepped triangles, like the outline of a gopuram, in zari.

Also: kodiyal, kottu

Korvai is a Tamil word meaning something strung or joined together. In a Kanchipuram silk saree, the border is woven in a colour different from the body, and the two are not woven as one piece. The weft threads of the border and of the body are linked together where they meet, in an interlocking join, and in the finished cloth the join forms a zigzag line. The method lets the weaver use a bold border against a plain body, and it is a hallmark of a handwoven Kanchipuram. It is slow work, often done by two weavers on one loom.
