Kuchu
The tassels at the end of the pallu, formed by knotting or twisting the loose warp threads.
Also: tassels, fringe, kuchi
At the pallu end of a handloom saree the warp threads are left uncut and extend past the woven cloth. Weavers or finishers group them and twist, knot or braid them to make fringe. These are the tassels, called kuchu in Hindi and some other languages. They keep the end of the cloth from fraying and also decorate it. Simple twists are common on cotton sarees, and some silk sarees have fine knotted or beaded tassels. Tassel work is a small craft of its own, often done by hand by women at home. Powerloom sarees usually have a plain stitched fringe.
