Kasuti

A counted-thread embroidery of Karnataka, worked in tiny stitches on both faces of the cloth.

Kasuti: counted cross stitch and darning from Karnataka, worked in small temple and chariot motifs.

Also: kasuti embroidery, kasuti work

Kasuti is a traditional embroidery of Karnataka, mostly from the Dharwad and Hubballi region, and the name is said to come from words for hand and cotton thread. The embroiderer counts the threads of the cloth and works small running and cross stitches so that the pattern looks the same on both faces. The motifs are drawn from daily life and temples: the gopuram, the chariot, the palanquin, the lamp, flowers and the elephant. Kasuti is used on Ilkal and other sarees and on blouse pieces, usually in red, green and yellow thread on a dark ground.
