Ikat
A way of making patterned cloth by tying and dyeing the threads before they are woven.
Also: ikkat, bandha, patola, pochampally
In ikat the warp threads, the weft threads or both are tied in bundles and dyed in a resist pattern before weaving. The weaver then sets them up on the loom so that the dyed parts line up into a design. The edges of the motifs have a slightly blurred, feathered look, which is a mark of ikat. Where both warp and weft are tied and dyed, the cloth is double ikat, as in Patan patola from Gujarat. Odisha, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh also make ikat sarees. The word is Malay, from mengikat, to tie, and the technique is found in many parts of the world.
