Elephant

An elephant motif, a sign of royalty and good fortune, woven or printed in rows or in processions.

A swatch drawn for this page, not a picture of Elephant.

Also: haathi, yaanai, gaja

The elephant is a symbol of strength, royalty and good fortune in Indian art. Gaja Lakshmi, the goddess Lakshmi with two elephants pouring water over her, is a common image of wealth. In saree weaving, elephants appear singly or in rows, as a border, or in processions with riders. Kanchipuram weavers make an elephant border, called yaanai in Tamil. Gharchola and bandhani cloth include elephants among the motifs inside their squares, and Baluchari sarees show scenes with riders and animals. The elephant is also stitched in kasuti.
