Pochampally Ikat

Best time: October to February.

GI: Pochampally Ikat is a registered Geographical Indication.

Pochampally, also called Bhoodan Pochampally, lies about 45 km from Hyderabad. It is the best known ikat centre in south India. In ikat the threads are tied and dyed before weaving, so that the pattern forms as the cloth is woven.

What is woven here

Pochampally ikat has bold geometric patterns with softly blurred edges, in cotton and in silk. Common designs are diamonds, zigzags and checks. Weavers make saris, dress material and furnishing cloth. The double ikat form, in which both warp and weft are tied and dyed, is found here and takes skill. The colours are strong, in reds, blacks, blues and whites.

The craft and its people

The work is divided into stages: designing the pattern, tying the resist, dyeing, and weaving. Whole households take part, and many villages around Pochampally share the trade. The place name came to stand for a style, and imitations are common, which is why the GI mark matters.

Seeing it

Visitors can walk the weaving lanes of the village and see dyed yarn drying on frames in the open. Cooperative society showrooms and a handloom park sell the cloth. It is an easy day trip from Hyderabad.
