Kutch is a large district in western Gujarat, bordering Pakistan, with desert and salt flats. It is one of India's richest places for craft. Bhujodi, a village near Bhuj, is its best known weaving centre, and nearby villages are known for embroidery, tie-dye and block printing.

What is woven here

Bhujodi weavers make shawls, stoles and saris in wool and cotton, often with a woven pattern in contrasting colours. Elsewhere in Kutch, communities make embroidered cloth with mirrors, bandhani tie-dye in Mandvi and Bhuj, and block prints at Ajrakhpur and Dhamadka. Many of these crafts are used for dress and for saris, dupattas and blouses.

The craft and its people

The weaving at Bhujodi is carried out by Vankar families, many of them of the Meghwal community. Embroidery is the work of women of pastoral groups, who stitch for family use as well as sale. After the 2001 earthquake, craft organisations helped many artisans rebuild their work and find new markets.

Seeing it

Bhujodi has a number of weavers who welcome visitors to workshops and showrooms. The Kutch Museum in Bhuj has a good collection, and the Rann of Kutch is a draw in the cooler season. Always check road and permit rules for border areas before travel.
