Veshti

The Tamil word for the dhoti, a long cloth wrapped round the waist and legs.

Also: vesti, vetti, panche

Veshti is the Tamil name for the dhoti. It is usually white or cream, with a border in a colour or in zari, and is worn by Tamil men in a wrapped drape that is tucked at the waist. A veshti is sometimes worn with an upper cloth, the angavastram. In the nine-yard Madisar saree, the way the cloth is brought between the legs recalls the veshti. Weavers in Tamil Nadu make veshtis and sarees on the same cotton looms, so the two cloths are often related in colour and border.
