Sungudi

Tie-dyed cotton of Madurai in Tamil Nadu, with a pattern of fine dots made by tying the cloth.

Bandhani: cloth plucked and tied in thousands of tiny knots, then dyed. The tied dots stay light.

Also: chungidi, sungadi

Sungudi is a tie-dyed cotton cloth made in and around Madurai in Tamil Nadu. Tiny points of the cloth are tied with thread, often in rows, and the cloth is dyed so that each tied point leaves a small light dot. The result is a cloth with a speckled field, often bordered in a plain colour. Sungudi sarees are light and soft, and they are worn as everyday sarees in the hot months. The craft is linked with the Saurashtra community of Madurai, which also keeps a strong tradition of silk weaving.
