Chunri

A tie-dyed scarf or saree dotted with tiny tied circles, from Rajasthan and Gujarat.

Bandhani: cloth plucked and tied in thousands of tiny knots, then dyed. The tied dots stay light.

Also: chunari, chundri

Chunri is a tie-dyed cloth in which small points of the fabric are plucked up and tied with thread before dyeing. When the cloth is opened, each tied point leaves a pale ring or dot on the coloured ground. It is related to bandhani, and the two names are often used for similar work. Chunri is traditionally a bright cloth for women, worn as an odhni at weddings and festivals in Rajasthan and Gujarat. The same word is also used in north India for a ceremonial red cloth offered to goddesses. Sarees in chunri work are made in cotton, georgette and silk.
