Plain weave

The simplest weave, where each weft thread passes over one warp thread and under the next, alternating on every row.

vertical: warp, across: weft
Plain weave: the weft thread goes over one warp thread and under the next, then the reverse on the next row.

Also: tabby, tabby weave

In plain weave the weft goes over one warp thread, then under the next, and on the following row it does the opposite. The two sets of threads lock at every crossing, which makes a firm, flat cloth with no diagonal line and no long floats. Most everyday cotton sarees, mulmul, voile, chiffon and organza are plain weave, and so is the ground of many silk sarees. Because the crossings are close, the cloth is strong, but it creases more than twill. Patterns are then added by changing colour or by weaving in extra weft.
