The new cloth given as a gift at Onam in Kerala, by elders to the younger members of a family.

Also: onakkodi, Onakkodi

Onakodi is the Malayalam word for the new clothes given at Onam, the harvest festival of Kerala. Ona means Onam and kodi means new cloth. Family elders, and employers in older times, give clothes to the younger members, and people dress in them for the festival day. The usual gift is a mundu or a set-mundu in cream with a gold kasavu border, and a kasavu saree for women. Many people buy these in the weeks before Onam, and weavers in Balaramapuram and Chendamangalam see their busiest season then.
