Muga

A golden-yellow silk made only in Assam, from a worm that feeds on som and soalu leaves, known for its shine and long life.

Also: muga silk, golden silk of Assam

Muga silk comes from Antheraea assamensis, a silkworm that lives on som and soalu trees in Assam. The thread is a natural golden yellow, and the cloth has a glossy, almost metallic sheen. It is very durable. Muga is said to become softer and shinier with age and washing, and old muga mekhela chadors are handed down in families. It is difficult to dye, so the cloth is mostly left in its own colour. The silk is a regional speciality of Assam, around Sualkuchi and nearby villages, and it has a Geographical Indication.
