Eri
A soft, warm, cream-coloured silk from Assam and the northeast, spun rather than reeled, from a worm fed on castor leaves.
Also: endi, ahimsa silk of Assam, eri silk
Eri, also called endi, comes from the worm Samia ricini, which feeds mainly on castor leaves. Its cocoon is open at one end, so the moth can leave without breaking the thread, and the silk is therefore spun from the cocoon like cotton, not reeled as one filament. For this reason it is often called ahimsa silk or peace silk. Eri thread is soft and fluffy, the cloth is warm in winter and comfortable in summer, and its natural colour is cream to off white or a pale brick red. It is woven into shawls, stoles and sarees in Assam and Meghalaya.
