Mothra

A leheriya pattern of small checks, made by tying the cloth in both directions.

Leheriya: a wave pattern made by rolling the cloth and tying it, then dyeing it in bands.

Also: mothda, mothara

Mothra is a variation of leheriya. In leheriya the cloth is rolled and tied once, and the dyed result is a set of diagonal stripes. For mothra the cloth is opened, rolled again in the other direction and tied and dyed a second time. The two sets of stripes cross each other and make a pattern of small squares or diamonds, like a checkerboard on the diagonal. Mothra is a harder pattern to tie evenly, and cloth with a clean mothra has a good reputation among Rajasthani dyers. It is worn as a saree, a dupatta or a turban cloth.
